A new study by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas is being published in the journal
The new study, led by Dr. Feixiong Cheng, MD, and colleagues, analyzed the data of more than 1,000 men and women with an enlarged prostatic tumour who had not been treated with finasteride for a year and a half. The men had been receiving finasteride for up to seven years, and the women had been treated for more than three years. The researchers analyzed the side effects of finasteride, which is sold under the brand name Proscar, to find out which of the two drugs had a much greater effect, or the number of side effects, than the other two.
The data showed that finasteride and Proscar were significantly more likely to cause hair loss in men than in women, but only Proscar had a larger effect on hair loss than finasteride. The authors also noted that while the effect of finasteride on hair loss was small, the effect was larger and so was Proscar. They conclude that finasteride and Proscar are equally effective for treating hair loss.
The researchers say that while they are not sure about the effect of finasteride on hair loss, they think the drug may have a similar effect, or the number of side effects, to that of finasteride.
“It’s very difficult to determine the effect of a drug on hair loss,” Cheng said. “The effect of finasteride on hair loss could be even greater. The effect of Proscar is different, so the number of side effects is different.”
Kaminsky’s team analyzed the data for all finasteride-treated patients and was surprised by the number of men who had an enlarged prostatic tumour. They also saw a slight increase in the number of men who had lost hair on finasteride. “This is one of the few studies that we have seen that we have done in this area of cancer,” Cheng said.
The researchers analyzed the data from the Proscar and Proscar Proscar studies and found that finasteride was more likely to cause hair loss than Proscar. They found that Proscar was the most likely to cause hair loss.
